In the fall semester of 2022, Dr. Shehzadi Zamurrad Awan integrated an Oral History Project titled “Voices of Pashtun Students: Stories of Their Struggles in Punjab” within her course PLSC 204: Pakistan Provincial & Local Governments at Forman Christian College University (FCCU), Lahore, Pakistan.
The project aimed to highlight the integration challenges encountered by Pashtun students at FCCU, focusing on their academic and socio-psychological experiences. Accepted by AMICAL’s Digital Oral History cohort program from Spring 2022 through Summer 2023, the project facilitated consultation sessions with Dr. Brooke Bryan, by engaging both the Principal Investigator and students. Through this initiative, students acquired interview techniques and ethics via OHLA (Oral History in the Liberal Arts) and conducted interviews in Urdu/English using OHMS (Oral History Metadata Synchronizer) for indexing and transcription, thus marking a pioneering student-centered oral history venture archived in the institution’s digital library. Emphasizing community partnerships and pedagogical considerations, the project aimed to compile an archive reflecting Pashtun students’ narratives, impart oral history skills, and present findings publicly. Dr. Awan’s qualifications and the project’s outcomes highlight its potential for academic enrichment and community engagement.
